New figus Retusa Part 2 - Defoliating

Dear All,

Yesterday I decided to work on the new Figus I bought online. I firstly defoliated the whole tree to better see what I had to work with. It is important ONLY to do this to very healthy trees..as the tree will be weakned... but as the tree was in perfect condition.. I went for it.... Below are some pictures of the tree defoliated.. as you can see there are a lot of branches to work with but most of them was long a leggy.

I think the tree can look amazing when it is done and I was happy to see there are NO big wire marks or ugly scares to deal with.

New figus Retusa

Dear All,

A couple of weeks ago I saw this new figus retusa online... and a couple of days later I decided to purchase it. I really liked the natural feel of the tree. It needed some work as it was kinda overgrown and many leggy branches. I will keep the shape of the tree quit round and compact.
The branches will be placed in a "out and up" way, as these trees grow in this way.

The pot itself was broken (already in the description online) so I asked the nursery - Kaizenbonsai.ukif they had a suggestion to a replacement pot. (ended up with the green you can see sits underneath the tree in the pictures.  Maybe the tree should have gone into a more ovale pot but I really like the more rectangular ones. But this glazed pot it really nice for this tree.
It is a bit too early to repot.. so that will be done later this summer.

Below I have posted some pictures of the tree of arrival. It was very well packed from the nursery.

Very well boxed and in perfect condition on arrival.

Figus airlayering update

Dear All,

Today I decided to separate the tree from its old rootbase after I did the air layering a couple of month ago.
It took some time as the saw I was using was terrible... so small reminder to my self to have good tools always for this kind of job. ;-)

I repotted the tree in the same pot but deeper to avoid the new roots to dry out. Later the tree will go in a more shallow pot.

The tree looks already so much better and more powerful as the hight have been reduced and the angel of the tree have been adjusted.

The top part of the crown is still way too big.. but for now I will leave the tree to grow freely to develop the new roots further.
I am quit happy with the result so far.

Below I have added some pictures of the process.

Figus airlayering update

Dear All,

Small update on the figus airlayering I am in the process of doing... The tree filled out the bag quit fast and have been shooting new growth like crazy.. so I have made room for more roots by expanding the bag further and added more soil. I am not sure when I will cut off the old root base... and not sure if I should defoliate the tree when I do? I need to look into that... but you are welcome to give your comments on this.

Cheap Olive bonsai...

Dear All,

This little Olive tree I received as a small gift from a friend... It have just been sitting in its pot for the last year or so.. Did not really think of it.. and it did not really grow... just surviving..
I found a small bonsai pot and I did a repotting of the tree as it was highly needed... the pot was full of roots and maybe therefore it did not really grow. I gave it a light trimming and added it to the bonsai pot... not so bad after all... I am sure it will start to shoot out new growth in a month or so... will keep you posted...

Bonsai made of a 4 Euro tree 2... (Pinus pinea)

Dear all

In a earlier post I did some work on a very young Pinus Pinea pine... I bought 2 of them. One was done with a more twisted trunk... the other one I did as a upright style.
Below is a picture of the "finished result"... yes.. it will be many many MANY years before it will look anything like the inspirational picture I have added as well but that style is what I am aiming for... patience patience PATIENCE.. the beauty of bonsai...
